I recently enjoyed a conversation with the Multipolarity podcast during which I concluded that UK foreign policy has drifted in circles for the past two decades. Circles, because we continue to try to same old prescriptions, hoping vainly that they might work this time. And drifting, because we lack any sense of purpose and are completely dependent for our ideas on a changing cast of decision makers in Washington DC. But British 'leaders' of red or blue persuasion have totally abdicated from independence of foreign policy. If we are "drifting in circles" it is in a pool of gatorade (a euphemism).
I'd been thinking about the Cameron-Osborne twerking in China's direction, which at least was a big idea, whatever the pros and cons of it, so no surprise when it was mentioned late on (around 36:00). Certainly the most recent example of (GB) 'strategy'.
